In the movie Asher, audiences are taken on a thrilling ride through the life of a veteran hitman, played brilliantly by Ron Perlman. The film’s story revolves around Asher (Perlman), who is on the cusp of retirement and looking for one final gig to cash out his considerable skills. However, what should have been a simple job turns into something much more dangerous and complicated.
From the opening shots, it is clear that Asher is not your average hitman. We see him going about his routine in his Brooklyn neighborhood, visiting his favorite diner and listening to classical music while planning his next target. Perlman effortlessly captures Asher’s world-weary demeanor and precise attention to detail.
The plot takes an unexpected turn when Asher falls for a woman named Sophie (Famke Janssen), who just happens to be the daughter of one of his targets. This adds an emotional depth to the film that elevates it beyond mere action-thriller cliches. Perlman and Janssen have great chemistry together, with each playing off of the other’s strengths.
One aspect of Asher that stands out is its attention to detail. The film takes place in New York City, but not the pristine version we see in many movies. Instead, we are shown the gritty side of Brooklyn, where crime and poverty are rampant. Director Michael Caton-Jones uses this environment to great effect, creating a sense of danger that permeates every scene.
Another standout element of Asher is its score. Composer Daniel Hart has crafted a hauntingly beautiful soundtrack that fits perfectly with the film’s dark themes. The use of classical music throughout adds an extra layer of sophistication to the proceedings.
As for the rest of the cast, they all deliver strong performances. Peter Facinelli plays one of Asher’s rivals in the hitman world, bringing a sinister edge to his character.
