“Don’t Be Bad” is a gritty Italian drama about two friends on the outskirts of Rome, trying to live their lives and evade trouble. The film follows them in their partying and drug-fueled lifestyles, as they attempt to escape the harsh realities of their everyday existence. But ultimately, their reckless behavior catches up with them, and they must face the consequences of their actions. The film is a visceral portrayal of the price we pay for chasing pleasure at any cost.

Review
As I sat in the dimly lit cinema, my eyes transfixed on the screen before me, I couldn’t help but feel a thrill of excitement coursing through my veins. The movie I was watching, “Don’t Be Bad,” was a testament to the power of artistry and storytelling – a masterful work of cinema that had left me spellbound from the very first frame.
Set in the gritty underbelly of Rome’s criminal underworld during the early 1990s, “Don’t Be Bad” is a poignant tale of two best friends – Vittorio and Cesare – who find themselves dangerously entangled in a web of drugs, violence, and betrayal.
The film wastes no time in immersing its viewers into its seedy world – from the opening montage that shows clips of cars speeding through the streets, to shots of Vittorio and Cesare smoking cigarettes and downing bottles of liquor as they laugh and joke with each other.
It’s easy to get lost in this hedonistic lifestyle – one that seems to offer an escape from the harsh realities of life. But as the plot unfolds, we see just how dangerous this world truly is.
Director Claudio Caligari does an exceptional job at capturing the nuances of Italian culture and society during this tumultuous period. His use of handheld camera work and naturalistic lighting creates an evocative atmosphere that pulls us deep into Vittorio and Cesare’s world.
The performances by actors Luca Marinelli (Vittorio) and Alessandro Borghi (Cesare) are nothing short of amazing. Marinelli brings depth and vulnerability to his character, while Borghi exudes a raw intensity that is both captivating and terrifying.
At times, their performances are almost too real. There are moments where you forget you’re watching actors on screen – it feels like you’re witnessing actual events unfold right before your eyes.
One scene in particular stands out to me. It’s when Vittorio and Cesare are sitting in a car, discussing their future plans. The tension between them is palpable, and you can sense that something terrible is about to happen. As the conversation winds down, Cesare leans over and whispers something in Vittorio’s ear – a moment that sends chills down your spine.
The film’s soundtrack – a mix of Italian classics and electronic beats – perfectly compliments the gritty visuals and themes of the movie. It’s a score that gets under your skin, creating an atmosphere that is both haunting and immersive.
Despite its critical acclaim and popularity in Italy, “Don’t Be Bad” sadly never reached a wide audience outside of its home country before director Claudio Caligari passed away in 2015.
But for those who have had the chance to experience this masterpiece of cinema, it lives on as a testament to the power of storytelling. It proves that even in the darkest corners of humanity, there is light – if only we have the courage to seek it out.
In conclusion, “Don’t Be Bad” is truly one-of-a-kind movie – an unforgettable work of art that will stay with you long after the credits roll.
