Review
In the tranquil and picturesque town of Riverdale, it was an evening like any other. The birds chirping, the crickets singing, and the townspeople carrying on with their day to day lives. But little did they know that terror was about to descend upon them in the form of a deranged killer. This is the world that we are transported to in the movie “Spiral: From The Book of Saw.”
Directed by Darren Lynn Bousman, “Spiral: From The Book of Saw” is a psychological horror thriller film that takes us on a wild ride through the twisted mind of a psychotic killer. The movie is presented as a new chapter in the iconic “Saw” franchise and features an entirely different cast of characters.
From the opening sequences, we are thrown into a world filled with suspense and unease. Detective Ezekiel Banks (Chris Rock) is assigned to investigate a series of gruesome murders that bear an eerie resemblance to those committed by John Kramer (Tobin Bell), also known as Jigsaw.
As he delves deeper into the investigation, Ezekiel discovers that he might be dealing with a copycat killer who has taken on Jigsaw’s legacy. Alongside his partner William Schenk (Max Minghella), they soon find themselves embroiled in a deadly game of cat and mouse with very high stakes.
The storyline is engaging and full of twists and turns that will keep you at the edge of your seat throughout. From start to finish, you are constantly questioning who could be behind these horrific crimes and what their motive might be.
The film also features an exceptional cast led by Chris Rock who delivers one of his best performances yet as Detective Ezekiel Banks. His comedic talents are on full display but so are his dramatic acting skills as he portrays a man haunted by his past while trying to solve this mystery.
Furthermore, Samuel L. Jackson who plays Marcus Banks, Ezekiel’s father, is a joy to watch. His character is a former police chief who is now retired. As he and Chris Rock play off each other, we get to see the chemistry between father and son that adds an extra layer of depth to the story.
The supporting cast also includes impressive performances from actors such as Marisol Nichols, Nazneen Contractor, and Dan Petronijevic. As a result, the characters come alive on screen, and you find yourself rooting for them throughout the movie.
The production design of the film is top-notch. The sets are well-crafted and convey a sense of dread and unease that add to the overall atmosphere. The sound design also helps in creating an immersive experience as it heightens the tension during key scenes.
One of the unique aspects of “Spiral: From The Book of Saw” is its score. Composed by Charlie Clouser, who has been involved in the “Saw” franchise since its inception, it features a mix of electronic and orchestral music. The score adds an extra layer of tension to the movie while paying homage to previous entries in the franchise.
As with any horror movie, special effects are crucial in creating believable scenes that will frighten audiences. In “Spiral: From The Book of Saw,” we are treated to some gruesome scenes that are expertly crafted using practical effects which make them even more terrifying.
In conclusion, “Spiral: From The Book of Saw” is an engaging movie that will leave you wanting more. It’s a fresh take on one of horror’s iconic franchises that respects its roots while paving its way for new stories to be told. With excellent performances, well-crafted sets, an eerie score by Charlie Clouser and practical effects that will make your skin crawl; this film delivers on all fronts.
Gabriel Garcia Marquez once said, “What matters in life is not what happens to you but what you remember and how you remember it.” With “Spiral: From The Book of Saw”, director Darren Lynn Bousman and the cast and crew have succeeded in creating a film that will be remembered for years to come. It’s a chilling masterpiece that will keep horror fans on the edge of their seats long after the credits roll.
