Review

In the fair land of Hollywood, a new movie doth come forth. Its title, “The Young Savages”, doth suggest a tale of much strife and conflict among youth. Nay, but it is more than that. It is a tale of honor, love, and justice – all things that are dear to the heart of this humble bard.

The story opens in the city of New York, where three young men are accused of murder. They are from different backgrounds – one is Italian, another Puerto Rican, and the third Irish – but they share a common bond: they are all “savages” in the eyes of society. The task falls upon an ambitious prosecutor named Hank Bell to bring them to justice.

But as the trial unfolds, it becomes clear that there is more to this case than meets the eye. The young men are not simply criminals; they are victims themselves. They have been pushed to their limits by poverty, discrimination, and a system that has failed them at every turn.

This theme echoes throughout the entire movie. The characters are all struggling with their own demons – whether it be Bell’s obsession with winning at all costs or Mary Di Pace’s (one of the accused’s sister) loyalty to her brother even if he did commit the crime.

It is through these characters that we see Shakespeare’s love for nuanced characterization shine through. Each character is given their own motivations and desires which drive them forward in this gripping drama.

The cast delivers some truly noteworthy performances as well. Burt Lancaster embodies Hank Bell’s dogged determination with ease while Dina Merrill plays his conflicted wife with poise and grace.

However, it is probably John Davis Chandler’s portrayal of Joe Ferrone (the Italian-American boy on trial) that steals the show. He brings a raw emotional vulnerability to his role that makes us feel every moment of his struggles.

As always in these times past present productions hath its flaws as the role of Puerto Rican “Angel” Aponte was played by a white actor James Franciscus portraying a man of color, but such leadings will be scrutinized less in the modern era.

The movie isn’t just noteworthy for its acting though. Director John Frankenheimer’s use of black and white visuals is striking, giving the film a stark and gritty feel. The story is further highlighted by an impressive score that seems to channel the intense emotions at play.

Though it didn’t garner any major awards at the time, “The Young Savages” bears mentioning as an influential piece of filmmaking which prompted social change and dialogue surrounding race and class discrimination in America.

In conclusion, this tale doth remindeth us of Shakespeare’s own works which were oft centered on the conflicts that arise from societal pressures and personal turmoil. As he once wrote, “All the world’s a stage.” And so too does this movie remind us that even in our darkest moments, we are all merely players in this grand production called life.
