Review
In a world grappling with the pandemic, Doctor G provides a much-needed escape and inspiration. Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, the movie follows the journey of a young woman named Gunjan Saxena, who dreams of becoming an Indian Air Force pilot. With exceptional performances by its cast and stunning cinematography, Doctor G is more than just another biographical drama.
The storyline of Doctor G is based on the true story of Gunjan Saxena, who in 1999 became the first Indian Air Force female pilot to fly in a combat zone during the Kargil War. The plot follows her journey from an enthusiastic young girl to a pioneering woman in a male-dominated profession. However, it also explores her struggles and challenges, not just as a pilot but as a daughter trying to balance her dreams with societal expectations.
The character of Gunjan Saxena is portrayed brilliantly by Janhvi Kapoor. Her acting skills are commendable as she brings out the vulnerability and strength of Gunjan beautifully. Pankaj Tripathi plays the role of Gunjan’s father with perfection, making it one of his most memorable performances to date. Additionally, Angad Bedi plays Gunjan’s insistent and overbearing brother perfectly.
Doctor G also highlights some harsh realities in society that many women face. It brings forth issues such as sexism, gender bias and discrimination which are prevalent even today. One quote from the movie which elaborates on this is – “Men never question if they can or cannot do something; then why should women?”
The film’s score and popularity have been skyrocketing since its release on Netflix in August 2020. The soundtracks have been composed by Amit Trivedi and show his artistic genius at its best. Tracks such as “Asmaan Di Pari”, “Dori Tutt Gaiya” have received critical acclaim for their lyrics which complemented the emotions portrayed on screen.
The cinematography is stunning, capturing the scenic beauty of Uttarakhand and showcasing the rigorous training of the Indian Air Force pilots. The milestone of being the first Indian female pilot is not an easy feat, and Doctor G depicts this journey brilliantly. The film has its fair share of emotional moments, making it a rollercoaster ride for viewers.
Doctor G has won many accolades and awards since its release. From best actor (Pankaj Tripathi) to best director (Anubhuti Kashyap) to best soundtrack; it has won critical acclaim at film festivals worldwide. The film was also screened at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in 2020 and received a standing ovation from audiences.
The production and editing team have done an excellent job in bringing out each character’s essence and their journey to becoming pilots. It not only captures the physical rigours but also the mental strength required to overcome obstacles.
Although Doctor G received tremendous applause, it did face some criticism too. Some claimed that Pankaj Tripathi’s character seemed less involved in Gunjan’s journey than necessary. However, it is important to note that this movie showcased Gunjan’s story specifically and not her father’s.
The development of this movie took place over four years, with director Anubhuti Kashyap saying she felt compelled to make an inspiring film about a female pilot breaking barriers. She wanted to shed light on issues that women still face today as they try to pursue their career goals.
Overall, Doctor G is a well-crafted biographical drama that portrays different facets of Gunjan Saxena’s life beautifully. It highlights gender stereotypes prevalent in our society along with showcasing the determination required for individuals to achieve their goals against all odds. Doctor G sets an example for every young girl dreaming about breaking barriers and following her passion without fear or hesitation.
