Sometimes the best way to confront a problem is to bring it to light, expose it, and let it be seen for what it truly is. This is exactly what Kitty Green’s powerful film, The Assistant, does. The movie takes an unflinching look at the pervasive culture of abuse and harassment in the entertainment industry.
The Assistant tells the story of Jane (Julia Garner), a young woman who works as an assistant to a powerful film executive in New York City. The audience follows Jane throughout her day as she runs errands for her boss, answers phone calls, and tends to various tasks around the office. As the day progresses, we see hints of unsettling behavior from her employer – phone calls with actors that never seem to end, comments that hint at inappropriate behavior towards women.
