Review

As I sat in the theater, watching Anything Else unfold before my eyes, I couldn’t help but think of the great Mark Twain himself. This movie had all the elements of a classic Twain tale: humor, heartbreak, and a glimpse into the complexities of human relationships.

The story follows aspiring writer Jerry Falk (played by Jason Biggs) as he navigates his way through life in New York City. He’s in a relationship with Amanda (played by Christina Ricci), who is every bit as neurotic as he is. Meanwhile, Jerry finds himself drawn to Amanda’s free-spirited friend Brooke (played by the incomparable Woody Allen).

The plot is rife with moments that are both hilarious and poignant. We see Jerry struggling to find his voice as a writer while also trying to make sense of his own emotions. And then there’s Amanda, who is constantly grappling with her own issues while also trying to keep their relationship afloat.

The cast of Anything Else is truly remarkable. Jason Biggs brings an endearing vulnerability to his performance as Jerry, while Christina Ricci delivers a pitch-perfect portrayal of Amanda’s quirky neurosis. And then there’s Woody Allen, who steals every scene he’s in with his trademark wit and charm.

One particular moment that stands out for me is when Jerry confronts Brooke about her feelings for him. As she tries to deflect his questions, he says “I have this theory that when people tell you something negative about themselves, it’s usually true.” It’s a moment that captures both the humor and the heartbreak that run through the entire film.

Anything Else may not have been a commercial success when it was released back in 2003, but it has since gained a cult following among cinephiles who appreciate its unique blend of comedy and drama.

The film boasts an impressive score from legendary composer Danny Elfman, whose music perfectly captures the film’s offbeat tone. And the cinematography, which was shot by Darius Khondji, is both stylish and evocative.

As with many of Woody Allen’s films, Anything Else has not been without its fair share of controversy. Some have criticized the film for its portrayal of women, while others have taken issue with Allen’s personal life.

But ultimately, what makes Anything Else so enduring is its ability to capture the messiness of life. We see characters grappling with issues that are all too relatable: relationship woes, career struggles, and the universal search for meaning and purpose.

In many ways, Anything Else feels like a modern-day riff on Mark Twain’s classic tales. Both explore the complexities of human nature with humor and insight. And both remind us that despite our flaws and foibles, we are all just trying to make sense of this crazy thing called life.

So if you haven’t yet experienced the magic of Anything Else, I highly recommend giving it a watch. It’s a film that will make you laugh, cry, and think – all at once. And in that sense, it truly embodies the spirit of Mark Twain himself.
