Review
A most wondrous and grand tale hath been unveiled to us, dear readers! A tale that doth dance with mirth and revelry, a story that tumbles with delight and merry-making. A movie which hath captured the hearts of many a soul, and which I shall now regale ye with in great detail – “Anything Goes”.
The tale begins with a most curious premise – a young man named Billy Crocker, played by the dashing Mr. Bing Crosby, who is hopelessly in love with the charming Miss Hope Harcourt, portrayed by the lovely Miss Ethel Merman. But alas! She is soon to be married to another man! What is our dear Billy to do? Fear not, for he hath a plan. He shall stow away on the ship that Miss Harcourt is taking to Europe, and win her heart before they reach their destination.
But wait! There be more! The ship also contains the infamous gangster Moonface Martin, played hilariously by Mr. Charles Ruggles (mayhap ye have seen him in “Bringing Up Baby”?) and his moll Bonnie LeTour, portrayed by the seductive Miss Ida Lupino. And who should also happen upon this vessel? None other than Billy’s old flame Reno Sweeney, played by the ravishing Miss Mitzi Gaynor.
What follows is a jolly romp across high seas and even higher emotions as our merry band of characters sing and dance their way into each other’s hearts (and wallets), all while trying to evade Moonface’s criminal past catching up with him.
The music in this film is truly something to behold – composed by Cole Porter himself, it contains such toe-tapping tunes as “I Get A Kick Out Of You”, “You’re The Top”, and of course, the titular “Anything Goes”. The choreography is equally impressive – one cannot help but marvel at Miss Gaynor’s sultry dance in “You’re The Top”, or Mr. Crosby’s smooth moves in “It’s De-Lovely”. Truly, this film is a feast for the eyes and ears alike.
And the acting! Oh, the acting! Miss Merman shines as always, her voice ringing out over the waves with a power that would make even the most hardened sailor weep. Mr. Crosby proves once again that his crooning skills are matched only by his comedic timing – one cannot help but laugh at his antics as he tries to romance Miss Harcourt. And let us not forget Mr. Ruggles’ unforgettable performance as Moonface Martin – truly, he steals every scene he is in.
But what of the production itself? The filming takes place mostly on a ship (or rather, various sets made to look like a ship) which adds an air of authenticity to the proceedings. The costumes and makeup are also top-notch – Miss Gaynor’s sequined gowns and Mr. Crosby’s dapper suits are nothing short of stunning.
But what truly sets this film apart from others of its kind is its clever use of Shakespearean language – albeit with a modern twist. Take for example this exchange between Billy and Hope:
Billy: Fair maiden, I hath loved thee from afar for many moons now.
Hope: Sir, I doth appreciate thy attention but alas, my heart belongeth to another.
Billy: Then I shall fight for thy love with all my might! Or at least until we reach Southampton.
Truly, it is this blend of classic language and modern sensibilities that makes “Anything Goes” such a delight to watch.
In conclusion, dear readers, if ye hath not yet experienced the joy that is “Anything Goes”, then tarry not! Rush forth to thy nearest cinema posthaste and treat thine eyes and ears to a spectacle unlike any other. For truly, this film is a testament to the power of love, laughter, and the enduring popularity of Shakespearean language.
