As someone who has always had a fascination with human behavior, I was immediately drawn to the movie Bokeh. The film, directed by Geoffrey Orthwein and Andrew Sullivan, tells the story of a young couple named Jenai and Riley who are vacationing in Iceland when they wake up one morning to find that everyone else on the island has disappeared.
At its core, Bokeh is a meditation on what it means to be human. Jenai and Riley are forced to confront their own mortality and the meaning of existence in a world that seemingly no longer has any purpose. The film is slow-moving and contemplative, giving the audience time to reflect on their own lives and beliefs.
One of the standout aspects of the film is its stunning cinematography. Shot entirely on location in Iceland, Bokeh captures the stark beauty of the country’s landscapes in breathtaking detail. The filmmakers use long takes and wide shots to emphasize the isolation of the characters, highlighting both their insignificance in the grand scheme of things and their unique perspective on the world around them.
The two lead actors, Maika Monroe (Jenai) and Matt O’Leary (Riley), deliver excellent performances throughout the film. Both actors have a natural chemistry that makes their relationship feel authentic, which is crucial given that they are almost the only characters on screen for much of the movie.

As someone who spends a lot of time pondering life’s big questions myself, I found myself deeply moved by Bokeh’s exploration of meaning and purpose. The film asks us to consider what truly matters in life – our relationships with others? Our place in the world? Our legacy?
Overall, Bokeh is a unique and captivating film that will appeal to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking stories and beautiful cinematography. While it may not be for everyone, those who are willing to take the time to get lost in its contemplative world will find it well worth their while.
