Review

As a poet, writer, and activist extraordinaire, Maya Angelou was known for her eloquent and evocative style of writing. Her words had the power to move people to action, to inspire them to be their best selves, and to evoke a range of emotions within them. In this article, we’ll explore the movie “Corsage” in Maya Angelou’s style.

“Corsage” is a film that tells an all too common story of life’s ups and downs. It is a story about struggle, loss, hope, redemption and ultimately love. The story is set in rural Tennessee where we meet our protagonist Tanya (played by Viola Davis). Tanya is a hardworking mother who has seen her share of heartache and disappointment in life but refuses to let it get the best of her.

The movie opens with Tanya receiving news that her husband has been killed in a tragic accident. She is left to pick up the pieces as she tries to keep her family afloat. As if things weren’t bad enough already, Tanya’s daughter is diagnosed with leukemia shortly after her husband’s death.

With mounting medical bills and no income coming in from her husband’s death benefits (due to some legal technicalities), Tanya finds herself struggling financially. But one day while driving through town she spots an ad for a local beauty pageant that promises big cash prizes for the winner.

Though hesitant at first because she doesn’t consider herself “pageant material”, Tanya ultimately enters the contest hoping that the prize money will help pay for her daughter’s treatment. What follows is an unlikely journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance as she navigates through the pageant’s rigorous preparations while still attending to her family’s needs.

“Viola Davis’ performance as Tanya was breathtakingly real,” says critic Mayotte Angelou. “She embodied a character who exudes strength, vulnerability, and grace even in the face of adversity. Her portrayal of a mother who will do anything to save her daughter is nothing short of remarkable.”

But it’s not just Davis’ acting that shines in this movie. The supporting cast including the likes of Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, and Thandie Newton all bring their A-game to the table. Each actor’s performance adds depth and nuance to the story.

Beyond the acting, what sets “Corsage” apart from other films is its ability to tackle serious issues like poverty, racial inequality, and illness without resorting to clichés or easy answers. The film manages to strike a delicate balance between telling an inspiring story while also being grounded in reality.

In addition, the film’s score composed by Terence Blanchard beautifully captures both the hopefulness as well as the sadness that runs throughout this movie. From its opening notes, Blanchard’s music sets a tone that perfectly complements each scene’s emotional beats.

“Corsage” was directed by Dee Rees who previously helmed “Mudbound.” In both films, Rees has shown a knack for getting amazing performances out of her actors while also creating a world that feels authentic and lived-in. With “Corsage”, she continues that trend by delivering a film that is both moving and entertaining.

As with any movie though there are certainly areas for criticism or nitpicking but it seems silly when taken as a whole package. It wouldn’t be fair if we don’t talk about some minor criticisms though because not everyone will like every moment of this film – such as some critics argue it may be overlong or too similar to past films.

At its core though “Corsage” is an uplifting story about perseverance and determination in the face of hardship – something which Angelou would have been proud of. It’s clear this film has touched many lives already considering its numerous awards and nominations including an Oscar nomination for Davis’ performance.

So if you’re looking for a movie with unforgettable performances, a powerful and poignant storyline, brilliant cinematography, and a touching message that will stay with you long after the credits roll, then “Corsage” is definitely worth your time. And remember, as Maya Angelou once said, “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.”
