Review

Once upon a time, in the great state of California, there was a movie called “Dead Man’s Curve.” Now, I don’t reckon y’all have heard much about it, but let me tell ya – this film is one for the books.

The story follows two college roommates – Tim and Chris – who are determined to ace their exams and become doctors. But, as the saying goes, all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. So, the boys indulge in some wild parties and reckless behavior.

Their college dean warns them to straighten up before they’re kicked out of school, but do they listen? Of course not. Instead, they turn to their friend Rand for help with some exam answers…and things start spiraling out of control from there.

Now y’all might be thinking that this sounds like your run-of-the-mill teen comedy. But let me tell you something – “Dead Man’s Curve” is anything but ordinary.

For one thing, the acting is top notch. Matthew Lillard (who you might recognize from “Scream” or “She’s All That”) gives a standout performance as Tim – you really believe he’s struggling with his grades and his morals.

Michael Vartan plays Chris with equal skill – he’s got that boyish charm that’ll make your heart flutter. And then there’s Randall Batinkoff as Rand…well, let’s just say he steals every scene he’s in.

But what really sets “Dead Man’s Curve” apart is its dark twists and turns. This ain’t no happy-go-lucky tale of college shenanigans. No sirree – this movie delves into some seriously messed up psychological territory.

Take the titular dead man’s curve itself. It starts off as just an urban legend told by some drunk frat boys…but soon enough it becomes all too real for our hapless heroes.

Or how about the scene where Tim and Chris accidentally kill a woman with their car and then try to cover it up? It’s gut-wrenching stuff, let me tell ya.

And then there’s the ending. Oh boy, the ending. I won’t give it away but let’s just say that it’ll leave you reeling for days.

Now, I know what y’all might be thinking. “Mark Twain,” you’re saying, “this all sounds very heavy and depressing. Is there anything fun about this movie?”

Well, I’m glad you asked, dear reader. Because despite all its darkness, “Dead Man’s Curve” is also wickedly funny.

Some of the one-liners in this movie are absolute gold. Like when Rand quips, “A student loan is like herpes – your stuck with it for life!” Or when Chris tells Tim that his constant studying is turning him into a robot, to which Tim replies, “At least robots get jobs.”

The humor in this film is sharp and biting – a perfect juxtaposition to the heavier moments. It makes the whole thing feel like a rollercoaster ride – one moment you’re laughing your head off and the next you’re gripping your seat in terror.

Now I don’t want y’all to think that “Dead Man’s Curve” is perfect. The pacing can be a bit wonky at times – some scenes drag on too long while others feel rushed.

And some of the characters are pretty thinly drawn (I’m looking at you, love interest Monica). But overall, this movie is a true gem.

It didn’t exactly set the box office on fire when it was released back in 1998 – in fact, it barely made back its budget. But over the years it’s developed a cult following (including yours truly) and now has a well-deserved reputation as an underrated classic.

So if y’all are looking for something to watch on a lazy Sunday afternoon, I highly recommend giving “Dead Man’s Curve” a shot. Just make sure you buckle up – it’s gonna be a wild ride.
