Review

In the midst of a choking and oppressive heatwave, there arrives a movie that will take you to the edge of your seat. It leaves you gasping for breath as you witness the terror unfold in front of your very eyes. This is none other than the 2017 masterpiece, “Downrange”. Directed by Ryūhei Kitamura and written by Joey O’Bryan and Kitamura himself, this movie will have you looking over your shoulder every time you step out into an open field.

The plot is simple yet deep. Six friends decide to go on a road trip, only to find themselves stranded in the middle of nowhere with a flat tire. It all seems like a normal happening until they are struck by sniper fire from an unknown assailant who has targeted them for no apparent reason. Trapped in the crosshairs of an unseen enemy, they must fight to survive as they desperately try to outwit their shooter.

The cast was superbly selected with each actor playing their part perfectly. The synergy between them is palpable, making it easy for viewers to connect with them emotionally and psychologically. The performances are delivered with such realism that it’s astounding how much depth every character has.

As we delve deeper into the film, we witness just how realistic and terrifying each gunshot can be. The sound design is impeccable; every shot sounds different from one another but still retains its terrifying power. The visuals are equally impressive- taking us into an isolated location where danger lurks at every corner.

As with all great films, it holds its own when it comes to controversy. The film was screened at Toronto International Film Festival amidst talks about gun violence in America and whether this film exacerbates it or not. Kitamura however fought back stating that Downrange is “not about guns” but instead focused on people trapped in impossible situations.

Award-winning music composer Aldo Shllaku delivers on his promise as he creates a tense and horrifying score. It’s mixed and designed in such a way that it adds to the tension, boosting the horror and adrenaline experienced by the viewer.

Critics have had their say, and it’s been mostly positive. The Independent in their review describes Downrange as “bracingly cruel” while Variety praises Kitamura for his ability to “sustain suspense”.

It’s not just critics though, the general audience has equally given praise for this masterpiece. On Rotten Tomatoes, it holds an impressive 88% rating as fans of horror give it rave reviews.

As I sit here writing this article, a sense of dread envelopes me as my thoughts drift back to some of the scenes in the film. The special effects are so well done that they leave me wondering how some of them were even possible.

It’s no surprise that Downrange was filmed with a tight budget but you wouldn’t know it based on how seamless everything is done. The cinematography is breathtaking, making us feel like we’re part of the action.

The dialogue also adds to the realism; no words are wasted or unnecessary. Everything seems genuine, natural but yet terrifying at the same time.

Downrange is one of those movies where you will have to take breaks from every once in a while- not because it’s boring but rather because it keeps you on edge throughout its runtime. Every moment in this film is worth experiencing and if you haven’t seen it yet then what are you waiting for? It’s about time you watch one of cinema’s best thrillers.
