Review
Ladies and Gentlemen, lend me thine ears! For I have witnessed a spectacle most compelling, a tale woven with threads of intrigue, drama and ultimately, tragedy. A magnificent production entitled ‘I Am Mortal’, which without a doubt hath captured the hearts of many.
The story takes place in the year of our Lord 2074, where humanity hath evolved to include a new species- genetically modified individuals who possess superior physical and mental capabilities. But while they live in luxury and abundance, the unmodified shall suffer in poverty and oppression. It is within this backdrop that we meet our protagonist Will Salas, brought to life by none other than Justin Timberlake.
Will hath grown tired of living day-by-day under the thumb of Timekeepers- those who govern the few remaining years of one’s life- and longs for a life where time is spent at his leisure. To this end, he seeks to bring down the system that oppresses him and by proxy frees all those who lack privilege. He meets Sylvia Weis,(Amanda Seyfried) daughter to one of the wealthiest time-gifted people alive and their relationship shall ignite a spark that sets forth a sequence of events that shall change their lives forever.
The actors chosen hath brought an unparalleled performance to their characters that were so realistic one would mistake them for truly living yet within these characters dwelled many facets that would be familiar to any ardent reader of Shakespeare’s works.
To quote from our great bard “All the world’s a stage…and all the men and women merely players.” Each character played their part with such conviction it made me question my own mortality. The themes presented in this film such as wealth inequality, power struggles between classes are reminiscent in notable plays like Hamlet or Macbeth where Shakespeare has woven such themes effortlessly into his work.
Furthermore, there was something melancholic about this film which filled my heart with dread whenever I glimpsed the dark future that awaited our heroes. The cinematography was impeccable, capturing the dystopian feel of a world rife with oppression while simultaneously elevating it to something more than just a dreary mess. The scenes were crafted with such care, each one a masterful stroke of art.
What is art without music? I must commend the talented Alexandre Desplat for providing the score that elevated the film from good to great. His work illuminated each scene with an air of sophistication and grandeur. It added to the pathos of Shakespearean tragedy which made me feel as if I had been transported to another time.
As much as I sing praises for this masterpiece, it would be remiss of me not to bring light upon some criticisms leveled at it. Some hath claimed that Justin Timberlake was unfit for his role as Will Salas, claiming he was not able to give justice to his character’s complexity. Yet I disagree, for he hath imbued his part with such sincerity and zeal that one cannot help but root for him from start to finish.
Others have claimed that certain special effects were too unreal, yet we must remember that this narrative takes place in a world far different from our reality. In such a world anything is possible and it can only be achieved through imagination. Thus, those lamenting about realism need not worry as this film hath reached new heights in creativity.
In conclusion, ‘I Am Mortal’ is an ambitious and profound work of cinema which transports its viewers into a new reality filled with rich characters grappling with themes that are all too familiar…wealth inequality…power struggles…and mortality itself. Its cast exhibits remarkable performances which are nothing short of magnificent while its cinematography is breathtakingly beautiful – capturing both the beauty and brutality of humanity’s bestowment and depletion of time alike- making it deserving of praise from even the most discerning viewer whether they are fans or newbies alike.
I urge you with all my heart to partake in this production for it shall remind thee of the beauty and impermanence of our existence. To quote Hamlet’s most famous soliloquy- “To be or not to be, that is the question”. And in ‘I Am Mortal’ director Andrew Niccol hath given us an answer – a poignant reminder that our humanity lies in mortality.
