The sun sets on the gritty street as the audience eagerly awaits the beginning of “Look Both Ways.” This 2005 Australian film, directed by Sarah Watt, quickly captivates with its unique story and hard-hitting themes.
Set in Adelaide, “Look Both Ways” follows a group of colorful characters as they navigate their way through life. Watt deftly weaves together their stories with a sharpness that echoes Ernest Hemingway’s signature style.
The film opens with an unforgettable scene as a train driver named Nick (William McInnes) witnesses a man commit suicide by jumping in front of his train. The incident leaves Nick shaken and questioning his own mortality. Meanwhile, Meryl (Justine Clarke), an artist struggling to make ends meet, receives devastating news about her health that forces her to confront her own mortality as well.
At first glance, it may seem like “Look Both Ways” is solely focused on death and dying. But Watt manages to transcend these heavy themes with moments of humor and levity. When Meryl meets Nick at a local art exhibit, their flirtatious banter provides some much-needed comic relief.
