Review

MacGruber: The Resilience of a Comedic Hero

It is rare to find a comedy that can make us laugh, cringe, and root for the protagonist at the same time. However, MacGruber, the 2010 action-comedy film directed by Jorma Taccone, achieves all those feats and more. Despite mixed reviews upon release, the film has since become a cult classic and established its titular character as an icon of absurdity and perseverance. We can learn a lot from MacGruber’s journey as a comedic hero – his flaws, his strengths, and his unwavering determination to save the day.

The storyline of MacGruber is simple yet effective: our titular hero (played by Will Forte) is an incompetent but well-meaning former soldier who gets called back into action when a villainous mastermind threatens to detonate a nuclear bomb in Washington D.C. Along with his loyal team consisting of Vicki St. Elmo (Kristen Wiig) and Lieutenant Dixon Piper (Ryan Phillippe), MacGruber sets out to stop the villain before it’s too late. However, things quickly spiral out of control as MacGruber’s ego clashes with his lack of skills, leading to one disaster after another.

Despite its over-the-top humor and crude jokes, there is something undeniably endearing about MacGruber as a character. He may be obnoxious, self-centered, and downright idiotic at times – but he also has moments of genuine bravery and compassion that make us want to root for him despite ourselves. Perhaps it is his unshakable confidence in his abilities that makes him so likable; even when he fails miserably (which happens often), he never gives up or loses faith in himself.

Of course, much of MacGruber’s appeal also comes from the supporting cast – Wiig and Phillippe complement Forte’s antics with their own brand of deadpan humor and exasperation. The trio has excellent chemistry, with each actor bouncing off the other in a way that feels both natural and hilarious. Special mention should also go to Val Kilmer, who delivers a gleefully villainous performance as the film’s main antagonist, Dieter von Cunth.

In terms of production, MacGruber was a modestly budgeted film that relied heavily on practical effects and stunts rather than CGI. The result is a refreshingly tactile action movie that feels more like an homage to ’80s action flicks than a spoof of them. The film’s score by Matthew Compton and Christophe Beck also adds to the retro vibe, with its heavy use of synths and electric guitars.

Despite its cult following, MacGruber was not initially well-received by critics or audiences. Many dismissed it as too crude or nonsensical, while others found it too derivative of other action-comedies like Hot Fuzz or Beverly Hills Cop. However, over time, the film has gained a dedicated fanbase who appreciate its absurdity and willingness to push boundaries.

One aspect of MacGruber that deserves particular attention is its use of satire and parody. While it may seem like just another mindless comedy on the surface, the film actually has some clever commentary on American exceptionalism and machismo. MacGruber embodies all the tropes of a typical Hollywood action hero – he’s tough, ruggedly handsome, and always ready for action – but his ineptitude exposes the ridiculousness of such archetypes in real life situations.

At its core, MacGruber is about resilience – about never giving up even when everything seems hopeless. It may be an odd choice for a comedic hero, but Forte imbues his character with enough heart and determination to make him an unlikely but lovable underdog. Maya Angelou once said, “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated”. MacGruber embodies that sentiment in a hilariously absurd way – he may fail over and over again, but he never loses his spirit.

In conclusion, MacGruber is an underrated gem of a comedy that deserves more recognition for its sheer audacity and entertainment value. Its characters are ridiculous yet strangely relatable, its action scenes are thrilling yet ridiculous, and its humor is crude yet clever. It may not be for everyone’s taste, but those who appreciate irreverent humor and offbeat storytelling will find much to love in this film. As MacGruber himself would say: “I’m getting too old for this crap, but I’ll be damned if I’m gonna let Cunth win.”
