Review

The silver screen can be every bit as profound and moving as the printed page, and it was with great anticipation that I recently sat down to view the harrowing thriller “Monster.” The story of a woman’s descent into darkness, brought about by her struggles with mental health and addiction, is a stark reminder of how tragedy can strike anyone, at any time.

The film tells the story of Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute who turns to murder for financial gain. Charlize Theron gives a masterful performance as Wuornos, transforming herself physically and emotionally to embody this tormented character. Her haunting portrayal won her an Academy Award for Best Actress – and deservedly so.

From the opening scene, we’re plunged headfirst into Wuornos’ world. She’s alone on the side of a deserted road, her face etched with pain. It’s clear that she’s in turmoil before we even hear her voice. Her first words are sharp and angry – like broken glass – as she berates a driver who’s stopped to offer assistance.

It quickly becomes clear that Wuornos has had a hard life. She’s been beaten down by circumstance after circumstance until all she has left is her rage. When we see her next, she’s turned to prostitution in order to make ends meet. She seems resigned to this life, but not content.

Wuornos meets Selby (Christina Ricci), a young woman who awakens feelings in her that she thought were long dead. Their romance is doomed from the start, though – Selby comes from a wealthy family who disapprove of her relationship with Wuornos.

As Wuornos’ life spirals out of control, we see flashbacks of her past: she was raped repeatedly as a child by men in her own family. This trauma has left deep scars on her psyche that fester until they erupt in violent outbursts.

Director Patty Jenkins has crafted a bleak and uncompromising vision of Wuornos’ life, eschewing sentimentality in favor of brutal honesty. The film is unflinching in its portrayal of both the violence and the emotional turmoil that Wuornos experiences.

The cinematography by Steven Bernstein is stark and haunting, with scenes bathed in a sickly orange light that’s reminiscent of a Florida sunset. There’s a rawness to the images that perfectly echoes Theron’s performance – it’s as though we’re seeing the world through Wuornos’ eyes.

The soundtrack, too, is thoughtfully chosen. Music by artists like Journey and Heart provide an ironic contrast to the dark events unfolding onscreen. And when Wuornos finally snaps and commits her first murder, Tom Waits’ “Goin’ Out West” plays over the scene – a perfect encapsulation of her descent into chaos.

Despite its grim subject matter, “Monster” is an undeniably powerful film. It’s a meditation on loneliness, abuse, and mental illness – topics that Hollywood often skirts around. But here they’re tackled head-on, with an unflinching eye that refuses to look away from the worst aspects of human nature.

The film isn’t without its flaws: some have criticized it for perpetuating negative stereotypes about lesbians (Wuornos was gay), while others have accused it of taking liberties with the facts of her case. But these criticisms miss the point: “Monster” isn’t meant to be a documentary or even a faithful retelling of Aileen Wuornos’ life story – it’s an artistic interpretation that captures the essence of her tragic existence.

At its core, “Monster” is an emotional tour de force anchored by Theron’s mesmerizing performance. Like Hemingway before her, Jenkins has created something truly extraordinary: a work of art that speaks directly to our deepest fears and desires, and forces us to confront the darkest corners of the human psyche.
