Review
He was a writer who captured the raw essence of life, a master of the simple sentence who found poetry in the mundane. And now, a film has arrived that echoes his unique storytelling style – My Dog Stupid.
Directed by Yvan Attal, My Dog Stupid is a comedy drama that tells the story of Henri Mohen (played by Attal himself), a middle-aged writer struggling with writer’s block and a failing marriage. That is, until he adopts a large and unruly dog named Stupid.
The film is based on John Fante’s 1985 novel “West of Rome,” which Hemingway himself might have enjoyed. Like Hemingway’s work, My Dog Stupid centers around damaged characters trying to navigate life amidst emotional turmoil.
Henri Mohen is, in many ways, an archetype for the Hemingway hero: a struggling artist at odds with his family, grappling with existential angst as he searches for meaning in his writing. He spends most of his days holed up in his office, staring out at the sea while pondering his latest project.
But it’s not until he takes on Stupid as both companion and muse that Henri begins to find some semblance of happiness. The dog is big and boisterous – indeed, he earns his name easily enough – but he also has an uncanny ability to inspire Henri’s writing.
Of course, this newfound joy doesn’t come without its share of challenges. His broken marriage to Cécile (Charlotte Gainsbourg) has caused him to estrange himself from their two children and become bitter towards society in general. But as they all learn to live alongside each other again thanks to Stupid’s antics and charm, they find their way back into each other’s hearts – even if it means embracing life’s imperfections.
Attal plays Henri with typical Hemingway-esque stoicism and brooding intensity that endears him to audiences. Gainsbourg’s character provides an interesting contrast, as Cécile is free-spirited and unconventional, in many ways the antithesis of Henri’s order and structure.
The film also boasts a strong supporting cast including Pascale Arbillot as Henri’s affectionate but pushy editor, and Adèle Castillon as the couple’s teenage daughter who struggles with her own complex feelings towards her parents.
My Dog Stupid was shot on location in the picturesque seaside town of Le Touquet in northern France, with its stunning beaches and quaint architecture providing a beautiful backdrop for the action. The cinematography by Rémy Chevrin is evocative of Hemingway’s simple yet powerful writing style, with languid shots of the ocean and close-ups of Stupid capturing viewers’ attention.
The film has received mixed reviews since its release. Some critics have praised it for its emotional depth and nuanced performances. Others have criticized it for its seemingly predictable storyline and reliance on cliché (the writer who finds inspiration through his pet has been done many times before).
But regardless of opinion, there is no denying that My Dog Stupid embodies many of the themes and motifs that Hemingway himself would appreciate: love, loss, self-discovery, and redemption. Fans of his work will find much to appreciate here – not least because it is a loving tribute to one of America’s greatest writers.
As Hemingway once said: “There is nothing to writing. All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.” Perhaps that sentiment can also apply to making movies about life’s complexities – especially when they involve four-legged friends like Stupid.
