Review

As I sat down to watch the psychological thriller “Side Effects”, little did I know that I was about to be taken on a rollercoaster of emotions. Director Steven Soderbergh managed to weave together a story that kept me guessing until the very end.

The plot follows the story of Emily Taylor, played by Rooney Mara, who struggles with severe depression after her husband’s release from prison. After seeking help from psychiatrist Jonathan Banks (Jude Law), she is prescribed a new drug called Ablixa. As the storyline unfolds, we are taken through a series of unexpected events that leave us questioning what is real and what is not.

One thing that stood out to me about this movie was the incredible acting by all involved. Rooney Mara’s portrayal of Emily was hauntingly authentic, and Jude Law perfectly captured the desperation of his character’s situation. The chemistry between them on screen created an intensity that drew me in.

The supporting cast also did an incredible job, with Catherine Zeta-Jones’ performance as Dr. Victoria Siebert adding another layer of complexity to the story. Her character’s ulterior motives left me wondering who to trust throughout the film.

The soundtrack for “Side Effects” was equally impressive as the storyline itself. Composer Thomas Newman brilliantly captured each scene’s mood and emotion through his score, making it an integral part of the movie experience.

As I delved deeper into researching this movie, I discovered something shocking – it had only been released in 2013 and yet had already garnered criticism for its portrayal of mental illness. Some individuals had called out director Steven Soderbergh for his lack of sensitivity towards those suffering from mental health issues.

This got me thinking about how pervasive stigmas surrounding mental health still are today despite many efforts to raise awareness and confront them head-on. It reminded me of Brené Brown’s work around vulnerability and how important it is for us as individuals to challenge the stories we tell ourselves about mental illness.

As I continued to watch “Side Effects,” I found myself drawn into the complex web of deceit and manipulation that lay at the heart of the storyline. The twists and turns kept me guessing until the very end, which is a testament to Soderbergh’s skill as a director.

While the movie may not have received critical acclaim upon its release, it did go on to receive a nomination for Best Supporting Actress for Catherine Zeta-Jones at the 2014 SAG Awards. And even though it may have sparked some controversy, I believe that it addressed important issues surrounding mental health and medication use.

In conclusion, “Side Effects” is a gripping psychological thriller that explores complex themes around mental health, deception, and manipulation. It boasts an impressive cast who deliver outstanding performances throughout, with Thomas Newman’s score adding another dimension to this already captivating story. While it may have received criticism for its portrayal of mental illness, I believe that it is a movie well worth watching and one that will leave you questioning your own perceptions of reality.
