Review

Dear readers, I had the pleasure of acquiring a ticket to the new movie “The 8th Night” and cannot help but pen my thoughts in the manner of dear Jane Austen. The film, directed by Kim Tae- hyung, produced by Lee Sung-min, and written by Park Hoon-jung is a thrilling and gripping tale that will keep you at the edge of your seats.

The storyline is set in ancient Korean mythology where an imprisoned demon has run away from his captors. They have trapped him for seven years, awaiting an eighth day so they can execute him. A monk named Jin-soo (Lee Sung-min), who has been struggling with his faith after a traumatic event in his past when he was requested to perform an exorcism on the demon to prevent his escape.

The plot revolves around a young girl named Ae-Ran (Park Hae-Joon) who is possessed by the demon. Jin-soo meets up with her along with two other monks named Seon-hwa played by Kim Yoo-Jin and Yoon played by Nam Da-Reum at an isolated temple. They attempt to ward off evil spirits before Ae-Ran’s body becomes a host for the demon.

As the story progresses, it becomes evident that there is more than meets the eye. It seems like this demonic presence has been behind several recent murders, and if it possesses Ae-Ran’s body entirely, it could lead to catastrophic events.

The cast does a fantastic job of bringing their respective characters to life on screen. Lee Sung-min gives an excellent performance as Jin-soo, who struggles with his faith while trying to exorcise the demon possessing Ae-Ran’s body. Nam Da-Reum plays Yoon brilliantly as he attempts to assist Jin-soo despite his limited knowledge of exorcisms.

Kim Yoo-Jin also delivers a memorable performance as Seon-hwa, who displays her bravery and courage in fighting off malevolent forces and protecting Ae-Ran and her companions from danger.

The movie’s score adds to its appeal, with a fusion of traditional Korean music and modern-day beats. The soundtracks heighten the thrill in some of the scenes, making them all the more captivating.

Filming took place on location in Korea’s serene mountains, forests, and temples. The vast landscapes capture the essence of ancient Korean culture and lend an authentic feel to the production.

After watching this film, I can say that it is without a doubt a must-watch for anyone who enjoys horror movies. It is an excellent blend of suspense, terror, and mythology that keeps audiences enthralled throughout.

The cinematography is top-notch. It offers breathtaking shots of nature while capturing the essence of traditional Korean architecture. The special effects are remarkable, with realistic demons bringing life into scenes that would have otherwise been dull without them.

The dialogue flows nicely as well, with each character delivering their lines with conviction. There are several memorable quotes throughout this movie that will remain etched in your mind long after you’ve left the theater.

Despite receiving critical acclaim at festivals such as the Fantasporto Film Festival in Portugal and gaining popularity on streaming services like Netflix, this movie has also received criticism from some viewers for its pacing issues.

Overall “The 8th Night” is an exciting cinematic experience worth watching. With its excellent acting performances, enthralling plotline inspired by ancient Korean mythology, stunning cinematography, electrifying soundtracks and special effects- it is sure to leave you gasping for air after 1 hour 55 minutes run time.
