As the sun rose over the picturesque town, it seemed that all was well in the world. Birds chirped their merry tunes, and people went about their day with a cheerful demeanor. But hidden within the folds of this seemingly idyllic scene lay a mystery that would shake the very foundations of this sleepy town.
Vanishing, directed by George Sluizer and released in 1988, tells the story of a young couple, Rex and Saskia, who stop at a gas station during a road trip. This seemingly innocuous event sets off a chain of events that leads to Saskia Vanishing without a trace.
The film’s opening moments show us glimpses of Rex and Saskia’s relationship as they joke and laugh together while driving down an empty road. At first glance, they appear to be just another young couple out for an adventure. But as soon as they pull into the gas station, things take a sharp turn.
In one of cinema’s most frightening scenes, Saskia finds herself trapped in a terrifying nightmare when she opens her eyes after being drugged by Raymond Lemorne – played to perfection by Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu – , who reveals his plans to torment her until she breaks down emotionally.
But even more haunting than Raymond’s actions is Rex’s inability to find Saskia when he returns to the gas station. The rest of the film unfolds like a chilling detective story as Rex searches for any clues as to what happened to his missing girlfriend.
The film is made even more suspenseful by its non-linear structure. We see snippets of Saskia’s kidnapping near the beginning of vanishing but do not know who is behind it until much later.
Throughout the film, we’re presented with images that have been frozen in time – moments from happier times between Rex and Saskia – juxtaposed with footage from Raymond Lemorne’s torture and murder spree following her abduction.
As with much of Gabriel Garcia Marquez’ work, Vanishing shows us that even the most beautiful things can be quickly and easily destroyed. Saskia’s once bright future is cut short by someone who views her as nothing more than another experiment in his twisted psychological games.
The film’s performances are a masterclass in subtlety. Bernard-Pierre Donnadieu is equal parts charming and terrifying as Raymond, while Johanna ter Steege delivers an Oscar-worthy performance as Saskia. The chemistry between Rex and Saskia is palpable, making her disappearance all the more devastating.
Vanishing doesn’t rely on cheap jump scares or gore to scare its audiences. Instead, it crafts a slow-burning sense of unease that builds throughout the film until its devastating conclusion.
As with much of Marquez’s work, the film has a strong theme of fate running throughout it. Rex’s fate was sealed from the moment he stopped at that gas station; it was only a matter of time until he learned what had happened to Saskia.
The film was widely praised upon its release and went on to receive numerous awards, including the Grand Prix award at the Cannes Film Festival in 1988. Its haunting score – composed by Hennie Vrienten – adds an extra layer of dread to an already unsettling film.
Vanishing is a masterpiece of suspense filmmaking that will stick with you long after watching it. Its haunting scenes have seared themselves into the memories of countless moviegoers over the years, making it one of the most unforgettable films ever made.
