In 1960, the Western genre was still in its heyday. So it was not surprising that the movie “The Magnificent Seven” became an instant hit. The film was a remake of the 1954 Japanese classic “Seven Samurai,” directed by Akira Kurosawa. The American version was directed by John Sturges and starred Yul Brynner, Steve McQueen, Charles Bronson, James Coburn, Robert Vaughn, Brad Dexter, and Horst Buchholz.
The storyline is simple but effective: A Mexican village is being terrorized by a group of bandits led by Calvera (Eli Wallach). Unable to defend themselves, the villagers hire seven gunslingers to protect them. The seven must then train the villagers to fight back against their oppressors.
But what makes “The Magnificent Seven” stand out from other Western films is its characters. Each of the seven gunslingers has their own unique personality and skill set. Yul Brynner’s character, Chris Adams, is the leader and strategist of the group. Steve McQueen’s character, Vin Tanner, is a skilled marksman. Charles Bronson’s character, Bernardo O’Reilly, is a former outlaw who can use a knife with deadly precision. James Coburn’s character, Britt, is a skilled knife fighter. Robert Vaughn’s character, Lee, is a former gunslinger now suffering from PTSD.
Horst Buchholz’s character Chico initially joins the group because he wants to be a hero but eventually learns what it truly means to be one. Brad Dexter’s character Harry Luck is more interested in money than protecting the village but ultimately redeems himself.
Despite having such an impressive cast of actors each with their own unique skills and abilities; it doesn’t amount to much without quality dialogue that gives them something interesting and engaging to say on screen for maximum effect.
The script was written by William Roberts, with additional uncredited work by Walter Newman and Walter Bernstein. The dialogue is sharp and witty, but also poignant at times. For example, when discussing why he left the gunfighter life, Robert Vaughn’s character Lee says: “I’ve been offered a lot for my work, but never everything.”
The film’s score is another memorable aspect of the movie. Composed by Elmer Bernstein, it has become one of the most iconic scores in film history. The opening theme instantly sets the tone for the western genre and remains synonymous with the genre nearly 60 years later.
Not only was “The Magnificent Seven” a commercial success, but it also received critical acclaim. It was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score and won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor for Eli Wallach’s performance as Calvera.
One of the most impressive aspects of “The Magnificent Seven” is its cinematography. The film was shot in Mexico and features sweeping landscape shots that showcase the beauty of the country’s scenery. The final battle scene is particularly impressive with its use of wide-angle lenses to capture all of the action.
But despite all its successes, there were some criticisms. Some critics argued that it glorified violence and gunplay, while others felt that it lacked substance.
In hindsight, it’s clear that “The Magnificent Seven” set a standard in terms of both filmmaking and storytelling. Its sense of fun, adventure and camaraderie has resonated with audiences for over 60 years. And perhaps that is what truly makes it such a magnificent film.
