Review

It is a truth universally acknowledged that every year, Hollywood churns out blockbuster movies that leave audiences either in awe or flabbergasted. However, amidst all the chaos, there comes occasional gems that not only entertain but resonate with the viewers. Such a movie is Despicable Me.

The movie starts with a bang- quite literally- as we see the protagonist Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) engaging in an audacious heist- stealing the Great Pyramid of Giza! Yes, you read that right. The scene sets the tone for the rest of the movie as we are introduced to Gru’s evil plans to steal something even more valuable -the Moon.

But don’t let this fool you into believing this is just another mindless action movie. Despicable Me is much more than that. It is a comedy at its core and takes us on a rollercoaster ride of emotions as we witness Gru’s transformation from a cold-hearted villain to a loving father figure.

One of the most endearing aspects of Despicable Me is its portrayal of family dynamics. We see Gru struggling to connect with his adopted daughters Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier), and Agnes (Elsie Fisher). But through their innocent actions and unconditional love, Gru slowly starts opening up his heart, eventually becoming their proud father.

The casting for Despicable Me was spot on. Steve Carell delivered one of his best performances as the voice of Gru. He perfectly captured both his sinister nature and comedic timing, making us root for him despite his evil intentions.

But it wasn’t just Carell who stood out; Kristen Wiig as Lucy Wilde, Gru’s love interest; Miranda Cosgrove as Margo; and Julie Andrews as Marlena Grue are equally compelling with their performances.

Despicable Me has been widely popular among audiences since its release, earning nearly $550 million worldwide. Its popularity has also resulted in two sequels, a prequel, and multiple spin-offs.

The animation used in Despicable Me is top-notch, as expected from the production company behind the movie – Illumination. The film’s visuals are bright and colorful, making it appealing to both adults and children. Furthermore, its soundtrack by Pharrell Williams is just as catchy as the movie itself.

With an Academy Award nomination for Best Animated Feature Film and a BAFTA Children’s Award win, Despicable Me has had its share of accolades. Its success can be attributed not only to its entertaining storyline but also its unique take on the villainous protagonist.

In any movie, there are bound to be scenes that stand out. For Despicable Me, it’s hard to pick just one. Whether it’s Gru dancing with his minions or Agnes’s “It’s so fluffy!” line after seeing a stuffed unicorn at an amusement park; every scene is memorable in its own way.

However, one cannot overlook Despicable Me’s witty dialogue. From Gru’s sarcastic quips to Dr. Nefario’s deadpan humor; the screenplay is filled with one-liners that will leave you laughing long after watching the movie.

Despite all the praise Despicable Me receives, it still faced criticism for being too formulaic and predictable. Nonetheless, it does not take away from the fact that Despicable Me is a must-watch movie for all ages.

In conclusion, it may be hard to imagine George Orwell writing about an animated movie like Despicable Me but that does not mean this movie does not have value or deep meaning; after all, Orwell did write extensively about society and human nature- two themes that this film heavily explores. The fact that we see Gru- who was initially seen as a heartless villain- evolve into an empathetic father figure reflects how love can conquer even the darkest of hearts. Through its witty humor, relatable themes, and lovable characters, Despicable Me has rightfully earned its place as one of the best-animated movies of all time.
